THE STANDARD BAG — an homage to public design

The DOUBLE STANDARDS agency presents a premium container bag styled like a tried-and-tested everyday helper sold via the new product portal LivingStandards.Net

“Design should clarify a standpoint”, states Chris Rehberger, designer and founder of Berlin-based agency Double Standards. “Our designs are always about exploring an idea’s second glance potential.” In case of the new Standard Bag 1, 2, 3 bag, that’s the second glance at an ostensibly simple object: a classic rectangular, chequered plastic carrier. A non-design of sorts – and yet one well-known across the world as a “Chinese bag” or “laundry bag” and once even elevated to “world bag” status by style maven Tillmann Prüfer.

“This is an example of archetypal everyday design”, adds Rehberger. “And we pay homage to it.” With an object that almost copies the shape and colour-scheme – yet substantially ups the ante when it comes to material and handling. Double Standards showcases its handwoven Standard Bag fashioned from goatskin treated with plant-based dyes and available in black, white and red.
